Gyeongju, a tourist city in southeastern Korea, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun collaborate to hold a marathon competition on an annual basis.
In this year’s marathon, more than 10,000 runners participated in the event. The event was composed of 5 different categories: full course (42.195km), half course, 10km course, 5km course, and a fitness walking course. The runners ran under a tree full of cherry blossoms, enjoying the scent of Gyeongju’s spring.
The men’s full course event was won by Kenya’s ‘KEIYO JOEL KIMARU’ with a time of 2:28:18. The women’s full course event was won by the Japanese runner ‘MITSUKO INO’ with a time of 2:53:33.
The city of Gyeongju hosts the Cherry Blossom Marathon every April at the lakefront, where cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
Gyeongju is a city located on the southeastern side of South Korea and is adjacent to Japan. It is known as one of the most popular tourist cities in Korea, visited by a significant number of Japanese and Chinese tourists.
