DIMF, New Growth Engine for Korean Musicals

Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), the only and largest musical festival in Asia is catching the world’s eyes. Started in the 2006 as pre-DIMF, this year marks the 8th anniversary of the event, hosted by Daegu local government and arranged by Daegu International Musical Festival Corporation. At the 1st DIMF, the festival invited 6 musicals including “Ilpasanjo”, a Chinese musical, and staged 5 musicals created by Korean writers and 15 musicals performed by college students. The event also included other programs such as dating with musical actor/actress, highlight concert, and special lecture on musicals.

Since 2006, DIMF was held every June or July all around Daegu and has evolved since then. Thanks to these changes in 2012 it was selected by the Ministry of Administration and Security as “best practice for globalizing local brands” and received due recognition for its potential to become a global event. Daegu local government signed a deal with the DIMF Corporation and has been developing DIMF into a musical tour program.

Over the past 7 years DIMF featured musicals created by Korean writers and performances by college students and invited famous foreign musicals. By staging college students’ musicals, the festival gave young students with various opportunities and also attracted Daegu citizens.

Before the 8th DIMF, 2014 Creative Musical International Symposium was held. Musical experts from China, Korea, and Japan gathered at the event and shared opinions on the current Korean musical market and how to globalize Korean musicals. DIMF has put efforts in laying the foundation to finance and support for creating musicals.

Likewise, the most noticeable work in DIMF is how it finances the creation of new musicals. Financing and making friendly environment for musical writers is the most important thing for attracting general public into musical theaters. Supporting writers and building infrastructure is the utmost part to make world-class musicals. DIMF and Daegu musical market recognize importance of such infrastructure, with rapidly growing musical industry over the 7 years.

“Flowers of Love”, a musical created by a Daegu company (MAC Theatre) won the first prize in the 2013 7th DIMF. “Columbus-Runway Project” is a talent training program provided by DIMF and Korea Creative Content Agency to nurture professionals in the musical industry. It adopts an incubating system in developing talents, which is called DIMF Musical Seed, and tries to expand it into a practical and effective program. Staging college students’ musicals provides chances to develop new actors and actresses. Likewise, DIMF is focusing on carrying out developing an environment for creating musicals.

DIMF, Bridgehead Between People and Culture

DIMF has includes various programs including musical performances. DIMFringe offers many different performances in the downtown of Daegu. At the DIMF Musical Experience zone, people can experience the musical industry such as making small-sized stages and dolls. Special musical lectures are also prepared.

Unlike Seoul and other capital areas which have enough theatres and production environment, Daegu lacked such facilities before DIMF events, so Daegu citizens had limited access to musicals. However, DIMF promoted growth of the musical industry by providing various and wide selections of performances and allowing people to enjoy musicals.

2014 8th DIMF will be held from June 27th to July 14th in Daegu.

지난 7년 DIMF는 초청작 및 창작지원작의 공연을 선보이고 대학생 뮤지컬 페스티벌 등의 프로그램을 통해 뮤지컬에 열정을 가진 청년층에게 다양한 기회를 제공하며 시민들의 참여를 장려하는 부대 행사로 대한민국 유일의 국제 뮤지컬 페스티벌로 그 역할을 공고히 했다. ▲ 대학생 뮤지컬 페스티벌 참가작 '렌트'(Rent)', '오 당신이 잠든 사이에', '캐치미 이프유캔(Catch me if you can)'ⓒ 국제i저널 창작 뮤지컬 인프라 구축의 선두주자 제8회 DIMF의 개최에 앞서 주최 측은 ‘2014 창작 뮤지컬 국제 심포지엄’을 열었다. 심포지엄에서는 한중일 뮤지컬 각계의 관계자의 참석 하에 국내외 뮤지컬 시장 현황과 창작 뮤지컬의 해외 진출 방안에 대한 논의가 이루어졌다. DIMF는 1회부터 시행된 창작 지원 작품의 공연을 비롯해 다방면의 창작 뮤지컬 지원 프로그램을 구축하는 일에 다년에 걸쳐 노력을 기울여 왔다. 이처럼 DIMF에서 가장 주목해야 할 사안 중의 하나는 창작 뮤지컬의 제작 지원이다. 뮤지컬이 한정된 마니아들이 향유하는 고급 취미에 그치는 것이 아니라 다양한 관객층의 접근과 대중화된 문화생활로 자리 잡기를 꾀하는 이 시점에 대극장에 올라 흥행을 거듭하는 해외 유명 라이센스 작품에 뒤지지 않을 창작 뮤지컬 제작의 인프라 형성은 무엇보다 중요하다. 국내 유일의 국제 뮤지컬 페스티벌을 유치하여 7년간 가파른 성장세를 보이는 대구 뮤지컬 시장 역시 그 필요성을 충분히 숙지하고 있다. 2013년 7회 DIMF의 딤프 어워즈에서 대상의 영예를 안은 것은 대구 창작 뮤지컬 작품인 '사랑꽃'(MAC시어터 제작)이다. 지난여름 DIMF는 한국콘텐츠진흥원, 대구문화재단과 더불어 뮤지컬 전문 인력 양성 프로젝트인 창의 인재 동반사업 'Columbus-Runway Project'를 시행했다. 기존의 창작 지원 프로그램을 인큐베이팅 시스템으로 개편해 DIMF 창작지원사업 '딤프 뮤지컬 시드'(DIMF Musica Seed)를 시행하며, 창작지원사업을 기존에 비해 체계적이고 실효성 있는 형태로 확대시킨다. 주요 행사 중의 하나인 대학생 창작 뮤지컬 페스티벌은 차세대 뮤지컬 배우를 발굴하기에 더할 나위 없는 기회다. DIMF는 그 어느 때보다 창작 뮤지컬 선두두자의 역할 수행을 위해 박차를 가하고 있다. DIMF, 지역 시민과 문화를 잇는 교두보로 뮤지컬 작품의 실연 외에도 준비된 프로그램은 풍성하다. 대구 시내 번화가에서 다양한 무대를 선보이는 딤프린지 페스티벌, 무대 미니어처나 인형을 직접 제작하고 공연 관련 직업군을 체험하는 딤프 뮤지컬 체험존, 뮤지컬 전문가를 초빙해 선보이는 뮤지컬 직업 세계 탐험 토크쇼, 백스테이지 체험 등을 통해 축제에 참가하는 시민들은 다양한 각도에서 뮤지컬을 체험할 수 있게 된다. ▲ DIMF는 딤프린지, 엄마는 댄싱퀸, 스타데이트, 전야제, 딤프 어워즈 등으로 시민들이 참여 할 수 있는 이벤트와 다양한 볼거리를 제공한다. ⓒ 국제i저널 많은 공연 시설과 제작 환경을 바탕으로 해 현대 국내 공연 문화의 중심지로 자리한 수도권과 달리, DIMF가 개최되기 전 대구시민들에게 뮤지컬은 수요에 비해 협소한 공급량 등의 한계를 가지며 상당히 접근성이 떨어지는 분야였다.
