The marathon began in Greece, in 490 BC. At that time, Persian army crossed the Aegean Sea to land at Marathon, a city in Greece about 40km (25 miles) from Athens. The Persians had intention to enslave people of Marathon and to advance into Athens. The number of Persian army was 50,000 and the Greeks had only about 9,000. The Greeks needed help.

In order to request reinforcements, a messenger whose name was Phillippides was sent to Sparta. Phillippides had to run from Marathon to Sparta. Unfortunately, the Spartans could not move the army because of the religious reasons. The messenger ran back to Marathon with the bad news. The Persians knew that they had a numerical advantage and they lowered their guard. The commander of Persia sent half of his army to Athens leaving the other half in Marathon. In the end, the Persians were defeated, and lost 6,400 warriors.

Phillippides was selected to run 40km (25 miles) from Marathon to Athens, in order to deliver news of victory. He made it to Athens with exhaustion. He shouted "Rejoice ! We conquer !" and then died. The story about Phillippides became the legend. He remains in the heart of runners as the symbol of will, devotion and patience. The marathon became the official Olympic Games in the first modern Olympic Games in Greece, 1896. In 1908 London Olympic Games, the course of marathon was lengthened to 42.195km (26.2 miles). This distance was established in 1924 Olympics in Paris as the official marathon distance.

Daegu holds the Daegu International Marathon 2014 on April 6. The hosts of this race are Daegu and the Korea Association of Athletics Federations (KAAF). The race starts at Gukchaebosang Memorial Park at 8 a.m. The events of race are 'the Elite Full Course', 'Masters Full Course', 'Masters 10km Course' and 'Masters Run4Health Course'.

Over 16,000 marathoners from all over the country are expected to participate in the upcoming race, including 200 elite runners from both domestic and foreign. Various benefits will be offered to participating athletes. The winner of last years race is exempt from the participation fee and a group discount is provided to the group participants.

Daegu International Marathon is the only race that has been certified 'Silver Label' for two years in a row by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The IAAF certified Daegu International Marathon as 'Silver Label' after evaluating 15 elements such as the prizes, the number of people, record and nationality of athlete, etc. Daegu International Marathon is expected to promote Daegu's image of an international athletic city.

Participants can enjoy the two full days of marathon festival. They can experience the 'Daegu Modern Street Tour'. Market Street will be made at the venue of the race to provide participants with various food and spectacle. Daegu International Marathon is likely to become a major 'Sports Festival' of the city.

The Prizes will be given to 1st to 6th winners of the race. They will be awarded with prize money, trophy and certificate. The First Winner of Masters Full Course will get 1 million won. The First Winner of Masters 10km Course will be given 500 thousand won.

Applications for participation will be received from Dec. 2 to March 7, 2014 on the official website of the Daegu International Marathon 2014. The secretariat located on the first floor of the Daegu City Hall annex building. It costs 40,000 won to register the 'Full Course', and 30,000 won for the '10km Course'. Entry fee of the 'Run4Health Course' is 15,000 won.

마라톤 42.195km의 유래

[국제i저널 = 대구 여의봉, 최웅비 기자] 마라톤은 기원전 490년 경 그리스에서 시작되었다. 당시 페르시아는 에게해를 건너 그리스를 침공하기 위해 아테네에서 40km 거리인 도시 마라톤에 발을 내딛었다. 페르시아는 마라톤 시민들을 잡아 노예로 만들고, 아테네로 진격하려고 했다. 페르시아 군의 숫자는 약 5만 명이었고, 그리스 군은 9천 명 정도로 열세였다. 그리스는 구원이 필요했다.

그리스는 원군을 요청하기 위해 필리피데스라는 이름의 전령을 스파르타로 보냈다. 그는 마라톤에서 출발해 스파르타까지 달려가야 했다. 스파르타까지 가는 길은 암석이 많은 골산이었기 때문에 말을 타고 이동하기는 어려웠기 때문이다. 필리피데스는 스파르타에 도착했지만, 스파르타인들은 종교적인 이유로 군사 지원을 할 수 없었다. 그들은 보름달이 뜨는 시기에만 군대를 움직였기 때문이다. 전령 필리피데스는 다시 마라톤까지 달려가 나쁜 소식을 전해야만 했다. 페르시아 군대는 그들이 수적으로 우위에 있다는 사실을 알고는 방심했다. 페르시아 지휘관은 마라톤에 병력의 절반만을 남기고 나머지 절반은 아테네로 출병시켰다. 결국, 페르시아는 전투에 패배했고 6,400여 명의 군사를 잃었다.

필리피데스는 다시 한 번 마라톤에서 아테네까지의 거리를 달려 승전보를 알릴 전령으로 선택되었다. 아테네에 도착은 했지만 전투가 끝난 직후에 먼 거리를 달려 기진맥진한 상태였다. 결국 그는 “기뻐하라 ! 승리했다 !”라고 외친 다음 숨을 거뒀다. 필리피데스의 일화는 전설로 남아 마라토너들의 마음 속에 의지와 헌신, 인내의 상징으로 남아있다. 마라톤은 최초의 근대 올림픽 경기인 1896년 그리스 올림픽에서 공식 종목으로 채택되었다. 1908년 런던 올림픽에서는 마라톤 경기의 거리가 약 2km 정도 늘어났다. 영국의 왕과 왕비가 마라톤 경기의 결승점을 자신들의 관람석 바로 앞에 두고 싶어했기 때문이다. 그 후 1924년 파리 올림픽에서 42.195km는 마라톤 공식 거리로 채택되었다.

대구국제마라톤대회, 국제육상경기연맹 공인, 엘리트 선수와 진짜 마라톤 경험

2014 대구국제마라톤대회가 오는 4월 6일에 개최된다. 대회는 대구시와 대한육상경기연맹이 주최하고 대구국제경기대회조직위원회와 대구육상경기연맹이 주관한다. 마라톤 경기는 대회 당일 오전 8시 대구 국채보상운동기념공원에서 출발한다. 경기종목으로는 ‘엘리트 풀코스’, ‘마스터즈 풀 코스’, ‘마스터즈 10km 코스’, ‘건강달리기 코스’ 등이 있다.

대회에는 16,000명 이상의 마라토너들과 약 200명의 정상급 선수들이 참여할 것으로 예상된다. 작년 대회의 우승자는 이번 경기의 참가료 면제를 받으며, 단체 참가자들에게는 단체 할인이 제공된다.

대구국제마라톤대회는 국내에서는 유일하게 국제육상경기연맹으로부터 2년 연속 ‘실버 라벨’ 인증을 받았다. 국제육상경기연맹은 상금, 참가자 규모, 선수의 국적과 기록 등을 포함한 15개 요소에 대한 평가를 거쳐 대구국제마라톤대회를 ‘실버 라벨’로 인증했다. 대구국제마라톤대회는 국제 스포츠 도시로서 대구의 이미지를 제고하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

대구국제마라톤대회, 시상과 다양한 혜택 부대행사까지

참가자들은 마라톤대회를 2일 동안 축제로 즐길 수 있다. 대회의 기타 이벤트로 근대골목 투어가 실시되며 지역특산물 및 스포츠용품의 전시 및 판매장이 운영된다. 또한 참가수기 모집, 대회 인증샷 이벤트 등의 행사도 진행된다. 대회장에는 ‘마켓 스트리트’가 조성되어 참가자들은 다양한 음식과 볼거리를 즐길 수 있다.

마스터즈 종목에서 1위부터 6위까지의 성적을 거둔 선수에게는 상금이 주어진다. 마스터즈 풀코스의 우승자에게는 100만원의 상금이, 마스터즈 10km의 우승자에게는 50만원의 상금이 주어진다. 30명 이상의 단체가 모두 완주할 시 50만원, 15명 이상 완주할 시 25만원의 상금을 받게 된다. 최다 참가자 단체에게 주어지는 50만원을 비롯하여 기념품, 단체 부스, 행운상, 건강상 등의 특별상도 주어진다.

대회 접수기간은 3월 7일 금요일까지이며, 대구국제마라톤 홈페이지 (http://marathon.daegusports.or.kr)를 통해 접수 가능하다. 30인 이상의 단체는 단체장이 홈페이지로 직접 신청하거나 이메일을 통해 참가 신청을 할 수 있다. 방문 접수는 대구시청 별관 1층에 마련된 대구국제마라톤사무국에서 가능하다. 풀코스 참가비는 4만원, 10km 코스는 3만원이며 건강 달리기 참가비는 1만 5천원이다. 10인 이상 단체의 단체장은 무료로 참가할 수 있고 2013년 전국대회입상자도 무료로 참가할 수 있다. 2014년 대회를 기념하여 2014번째 신청자와 대회 최다 참가자에게 기념품을 증정한다.
