EXCO,MICE Leader of Daegu & Gyeongbuk

The MICE Industry, which is regarded as both high value added and new growth power, is recently attracting interests in the industrial world. MICE means the industry that makes economic profit by holding Meetings, Incentive tourisms, Conventions, Exhibitions. The term 'MICE' is mostly used in Asia. In Canada it is called MC&IT(Meeting, Convention and Incentive Travel) and in Australia, Business Events. The term for the MICE differs with contries.

With the deindustrialization, major nations and cities focus on the creation of high value added ideas and the promotion of knowledge service industry instead of the manufacturing industry. The MICE industry, among others, directly affects the merchandise trade, exhiition and convention industry and it promotes the exchange of information and technique, the city image, tourism industry. It also has a great ripple effect in the various field of lodging, advertising, performances. In Korea, the MICE industry has been designated as the new growth power industry since 2009. The government has put a lot of hard work to promote and support the MICE, by constructing infrastructures, offering educations and tax benefits.

Daegu & Gyeongsangbuk-do region is paying attention to the MICE industry, which is called as 'no smoking bonanza', and expands supports for the event hosting. The region is becoming a leading Mice City with its facilities such as EXCO(Daegu), GUMICO(Gumi), HICO(Gyeongju) and its successful hosting experience of 'the Istanbul-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2013', 'Session of the UNWTO General Assembly', 'G-20', 'World Energy Congress(WEC)'.

International Scale Eco-Friendly Exhibition & Convention Center

EXCO launched as the first regional exhibition & convention center in April 2001. At that time, Daegu & Gyeongbuk region was regarded as wasteland for the exhibition and convention industry because of its regional economic difficulty and the concentration into the capital region. EXCO figured out the domestic and foreign competitive landscape, and succeeded in the differentiation based on the regional special industry. EXCO's differentiation strategy made competitive events in various industry fields, such as 'the International Fire & Safety EXPO', 'International Green Energy Expo', 'International Textile Fair', 'Super Car Festival'.

With the expansion in 2011, EXCO successively held 'IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011', 'International Congress of Entomology(ICE2012)', and 'World Energy Congress 2013(WEC)'. EXCO has been a catalyst for Daegu & Gyeongbuk to lead the MICE industry. The World Energy Congress in 2013 was the largest international event since its opening. As the host, EXCO provided the perfect supports for the hosting and successfully performed a PEO(Professional Exhibition Organiser) role. It also succeeded in receiving visitors, by presenting a beautiful Korean autumn garden. On the basis of its experiences, EXCO will make the upcoming '7th World Water Forum 2015' successful and maximize the ripple effect of the MICE industry.

Despite the difficult environment caused by existing variables, EXCO promotes the exhibitions and activated the event holdings. It integrated creative ideas with exhibition and convention and continuously improved the service. After the expansion in 2011, EXCO is evaluated to achieve the effect of 'economy of scale' by the internationalization of its own exhibitions, promotion of public exhibition, colocation of similar exhibition, lure of capital area's exhibitions, hosting of international events. In 2013, 4,917 exhibition and convention events were held at EXCO, 15 million visitors visited EXCO, and the economic impact was over 1 billion won.

EXCO's exhibition area is about 27,000㎡ (outdoor 4,000㎡). The 5 exhibition halls can be flexibly devided into 9 halls. The hall No1, 2 and 3 provides 15,000㎡ of exhibition area, so it can host international exhibition and various exhibitions. The Convention Hall situated on the 5th floor is a multipurpose hall of 3,872㎡. Not only the exhibition but also other events like international conference, concerts, cultural events can be held in this hall. The convention hall has no column and it has a capacity of 3,500 people. The hall is equipped with sound equipment, lighting system, simultaneous interpretation booth of 6 languages and 2,000-seats arranged in tiers.

Also, its 3,100-seat conference room and 1,600-seat Auditorium provide the best environment for hosting mega conventions. EXCO has become an eco-friendly exhibition & convention center with the renewable energy generating facilities like sunlight, solar heat, geothermal heat, light collecting device and rainfall.

Those who visit EXCO can enjoy 4 Five-Stars Hotels and 6 Four-stars Hotels, and other accommodations within easy distance. Daegu is the center of tourism in the Yeongnam region. It is the home of Buddhist cultural heritage sites, and the center of Confucian and Gaya culture with 5,000 years of splendid cultural heritage. Within 1.5 hours’ drive from here, you can find all 4 UNESCO cultural heritage sites in Gyeongju, Andong.

굴뚝 없는 황금산업, MICE

[국제i저널 = 대구 여의봉, 최웅비 기자] 최근 산업계에서는 고부가가치의 신성장동력인 마이스(MICE)산업에 대한 관심이 집중되고 있다. 마이스산업은 기업회의(Meeting), 보상관광(Incentive), 국제회의(Convention), 전시회(Exhibition)를 유치 및 개최하여 서비스를 제공하는 과정과 관련 시설에 대한 경제적 이익을 얻는 산업으로 정의된다. '마이스'라는 용어는 주로 아시아 지역에서 사용되는데, 캐나다는 MC&IT(Meeting, Convention and Incentive Travel), 호주에서는 Business events로 규정하는 등 나라마다 MICE산업을 지칭하는 용어는 다르다.

21세기 들어 탈산업화가 진행되며 주요 국가와 도시들은 제조업으로부터 탈피하여 고부가가치의 아이디어 창출, 지식 서비스산업 육성에 집중하고 있다. 그 중에서도 특히 마이스산업은 상품의 거래나 전시 및 컨벤션 산업에 직접적인 영향을 줄뿐만 아니라, 기술·정보의 교환, 도시 이미지 제고, 관광산업 활성화 등에 도움을 주며 숙박, 광고, 공연 등 다양한 분야로의 파급효과가 큰 산업이다. 우리나라는 2009년에 지식경제부가 마이스산업을 ‘3대분야 17개 신성장 동력 산업’으로 지정한 이래로 인프라구축, 교육, 세제혜택 등을 통해 마이스산업을 육성하고 지원하기 위해 노력을 기울이고 있다.

대구·경북 지역 또한 ‘굴뚝 없는 황금산업’으로 불리는 마이스산업에 주목하여 각종 행사 유치 및 개최에 대한 지원을 확대하고 있다. 대구·경북 지역은 대구의 엑스코(EXCO), 구미의 구미코(GUMICO), 올 하반기 개관 예정인 경주 화백컨벤션센터 등의 시설과 2013 이스탄불‧경주세계문화엑스포, G-20, 세계관광총회(UNWTO), 세계에너지총회(WEC) 등을 성공적으로 개최한 경험을 바탕으로 대표적인 마이스도시로 거듭나고 있다.

EXCO, 대구경북 마이스 리더

엑스코는 2001년 4월 지방 최초의 전시컨벤션센터로 개관했다. 개관 당시 대구·경북 지역은 지역의 어려운 경제상황과 수도권으로 집중된 경제 상황으로 인해 전시컨벤션 산업의 불모지라고 여겨졌다. 엑스코는 마이스산업의 심한 국내외 경쟁 구도를 파악하여, 지역 특화산업 기반의 차별화에 성공했다. 엑스코의 차별화 전략은 소방방재안전엑스포, 대한민국 그린에너지엑스포, 대구국제섬유박람회, 대한민국수퍼카페스티벌, 대구경북식품산업전 등 다양한 산업분야에서 경쟁력 있는 전시회를 낳았다.

2011년에 확장을 거친 엑스코는 2011년 세계육상선수권대회 총회, 2012년 세계곤충학회 2013년 세계에너지총회(WEC)를 연이어 유치하며 대구 경북이 전시컨벤션 도시로 앞서 나가는 데 큰 기폭제가 되었다. 세계에너지총회는 엑스코 개관 이후 가장 큰 국제행사였다. 개최지로서 완벽한 개최지원을 이끌어내고 전시회대행(PEO : professional exhibition organiser)을 성공적으로 수행했을 뿐만 아니라 세계 각국 참가자들을 위해 국화축제와 하늘정원을 준비해 한국의 아름다운 가을정원을 선물하며 손님 맞이에도 성공했다는 평가를 받았다. 세계에너지총회를 성공적으로 개최한 경험을 바탕으로 엑스코는 2015년에 있을 세계물포럼 역시 성공으로 이끌어 마이스산업의 파급효과를 극대화할 전망이다.

엑스코는 마이스산업 시장에 존재하는 여러 변수들로 인해 어려운 환경에도 불구하고, 창의적인 아이디어를 전시회와 컨벤션에 접목하는 한편, 지속적인 서비스 개선을 통해 전시회 성장과 유치활성화를 이끌어냈다. 2011년 확장 이후에는 특히 자체전시회의 국제화, 퍼블릭전시회의 성장, 유사전시회의 동시개최(colocation), 수도권 전시회의 유치 활성화, 세계에너지총회 등 국제행사의 개최 등으로 확장에 따른 규모의 경제효과를 달성하고 있는 것으로 평가받고 있다. 2013년 기준, 엑스코가 개최한 전시컨벤션 행사는 4,917건으로 집계되며 엑스코는 약 1500만의 방문객과 1조 이상의 경제 파급효과를 불러왔다.


국제 규모 친환경 전시컨벤션센터

엑스코의 전시홀은 총면적 약 2,3000 제곱미터 규모로 총 5개의 홀이 최대 9개까지 탄력적으로 분할된다. 1층의 1,2,3홀은 1,5000 제곱미터의 단일면적을 제공하여 국제규모의 전시회는 물론 다양한 규모의 전시회를 아우를 수 있다. 엑스코 5층에 위치한 컨벤션홀은 3,872 제곱미터의 다목적홀로서 전시회 뿐만 아니라 국제회의, 공연, 각종 문화이벤트를 개최할 수 있는 공간이다. 기둥이 없는 무주공간인 컨벤션홀은 약 3,500명의 인원을 수용할 수 있으며 음향, 조명시설, 6개국어 동시통역실, 2,000석의 계단식 객석을 갖추고 있다.

이밖에도 엑스코는 3,100석 규모의 회의실과 1,600석 규모의 극장식 공간인 오디토리움을 갖추고 있어 다양한 행사를 개최할 수 있다. 한편, 엑스코는 태양광, 태양열, 지열, 집광채광, 빗물 등 5개의 신재생에너지 발전 시설을 설치하여 친환경 전시컨벤션센터로 거듭났다.

엑스코에서 개최되는 행사의 방문객들은 정문 도보거리의 비즈니스 호텔을 포함한 대구 시내 4개의 특1급 호텔과 6개의 특2급 호텔, 기타 다양한 숙박시설을 이용할 수 있다. 특히, 대구와 인근 지역은 유네스코 세계유산 4건을 포함해 풍부한 문화자원을 보유하고 있어 엑스코 방문객들의 이목을 집중시키고 있다.
