350-Year-Old Tradition of Daegu Yakryeongsi, A Meeting Place for Residents and Oriental Medicine

Daegu Yakryeongsi Herb Medicine Festival will be held on May 2, for 4 days. This is the 37th year since the festival started. The festival aims to inherit the 350-year of Daegu Yakryeongsi's tradition and makes the most of region's character of place which has a concentrated herb medicine stores. Daegu Metropolitan City, Jung-gu are co-hosting the festival and the festival is held under the supervision of the corporation 'Yakryeongsi Protection Committee'. Every May, the festival is held at Yak-Jeon Street in Namseong-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu.

The word 'Yakryeongsi' refers to Yak-Jeon Street in Namseong-ro. Yak-Jeon Street originated from the seasonal herb market opened in 1656. In 1908, the market moved to the present location when the Japanese Empire demolished ramparts of Daegu. Yakryeongsi has become the daily herb market which represents the region and one of the major tourist attractions of Daegu.

Daegu Yakryeongsi Herb Medicine Festival has been designated as 'Culture Tourism Festival' by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for 13 consecutive years. Recently the festival is selected as 'Korea's Excellent Festival' in the 'Culture Tourism Festival Evaluation of 2014'. The festival offers opportunity for visitors to experience and understand the herb medicine culture, and it publicizes Yakryeongsi herb medicine culture and the excellence of herb medicine. Also, it attracts local residents and foreign tourists and promotes unity and community spirit of local residents. In other worlds, the festival has a very positive effect in cultural, social, economic fields. It is now the major festival of the oriental medicine culture in Korea.

Yakryeongsi, Hub for the Oriental Medicine Industry of Daegu

Daegu&Gyeongsangbuk-do region is the largest producer and distribution hub of herbs. Daegu has been promoting various projects, in order to raise the oriental medicine industry to be a local industry. Among them are 'Hanbang Well-being Experience Hall', 'Competitiveness Improvement Projects for Yakryeongsi Herb Special Zone', 'Herb Quality Improvement Support Project', 'Yakryeongsi Herb Medicine Culture Festival', 'Herb Medicine Museum', etc. Also, Daegu is continuously supporting the industrial research and companies of Oriental medicine.

Yakryeongsi plays a central role in the Herb medicine industry. Since its opening, Daegu Yakryeongsi has been the one of three herb medicine markets and it has the oldest history in the country. Daegu Yakryeongsi was certified as the oldest Yakryeongsi by the Guinness Committee of Korea in 2001, and it was designated as the first sepcial oriental medicine zone in 2004. It is now the only wholesale market for herb medicine. Yakryeongsi plays an important role in pricing on the herbs.

The leading brand of Korea's oriental medicine, Yakryeongsi is the axis for the promotion of Medicity Daegu. The festival is the main event of Yakryeongsi and it has an easy access for residents. So the festival needs residents continuing interests and participations. The activation of Yakryeongsi Festival will be the stepping stone for Daegu to become the hub for oriental medicine industry.

Yakryeongsi Herb Medicine Festival, Becoming True Culture Festival of Daegu

Daegu Yakryeongsi Herb Medicine Festival has improved defects and reinforced contents every year. Last November, Yakryeongsi Market Party was held at Yakryeongsi.

In the market, various oriental medicine products are sold at prices from 20% to 30% below their regular market value including herbs, specialties, functional health foods. Yakryeongsi Market Party aims to increase access to herbal products and to publicize the excellence.

Daegu Yakryeongsi Herb Medicine Culture Festival consists of experience programs like 'Free sasang constitution diagnosis', 'Medical Food Exhibition', 'Oriental medicine treatments', 'Herbal foot bath experience' and other programs including 'Currency use(yeop-jeon)', 'Herb cutting competition'. Festival organizers offers place for experiencing oriental medicine and publicize the exellence of herb medicine by promoting various events.

350년 역사와 전통의 대구 약령시, 지역민과 한방의 만남의 장으로

[국제I저널 = 대구 이현정 기자] 대구약령시 한방문화축제가 5월 2일부터 4일간 개최될 예정이다. 올해로 37회째를 맞이하는 대구 약령시 축제는 350여 년간의 역사와 전통을 자랑하는 대구 약령시의 맥을 잇고, 한약 관련 점포가 밀집된 장소적 특성을 살린 대표적 한방 문화 축제다. 대구광역시, 중구가 공동 주최하고 사단법인 약령시 보존위원회의 주관으로 진행되며, 매년 5월 대구 중구 남성로의 약전 골목 일대에서 개최되었다.

약령시는 현재 남성로 일대 약전골목을 칭하는 말로, 1656년(효정 9년) 한약재 수집을 목적으로 대구성 북문 근처 객사 뜰에서 봄과 가을 두 차례 개시된 한약재 계절 시장을 유래로 한다. 1908년 일제의 성벽 철거를 이유로 현재 위치로 이전, 현재는 지역의 대표적 한약재 상설시장이자 대구의 관광 명소로 자리 잡았다.

대구약령시 한방문화축제는 대구 유일의 문화 관광 축제로 13년 연속 문화체육관광부가 선정하는 ‘문화 관광 축제’에 지정되었으며, 최근 2년간 ‘2014 문화관광 축제 평가’에서 대한민국 우수축제에 선정된 바 있다. 약령시 축제는 축제에 참가한 시민들에게 한방 문화의 체험과 이해를 돕고 약령시 한방 문화와 약전 골목 약재의 우수성을 홍보하는 기회를 제공한다. 또한 지역 주민과 외부 관광객들을 유치하고 약전 골목 주민들의 단합과 공동체 의식을 증대시키는 등 문화적, 사회적, 경제적 다방면으로 긍정적 효과를 낳고 있다. 우리나라 한방문화의 대표적 축제로 자리매김했다고 평가해도 과언이 아니다.

대구 한방산업의 거점 약령시

대구 경북은 한약재 최대 산지이자 한약재 유통의 중심지이다. 대구시는 특성을 바탕으로 오랜 기간 한방산업을 지역산업으로 성장시키기 위해 다양한 사업을 개발해왔다. 주요 사업으로는 한방 웰빙 체험관, 약령시 한방특구 한방산업 경쟁력 강화사업, 약용작물 명품화 지원 사업, 약령시 한방문화 축제 개최, 약령시 한의약 박물관 운영 등을 추진하고 있다. 한방산업의 과학화 촉진을 목적으로 한의학 산업연구 및 기업 역시 지속적으로 지원 중이다.

이 같은 한방산업의 중심을 담당하는 것이 약령시다. 조선 후기 개시된 이래 3대 한약재 전문시장의 하나로 자리 잡은 약령시는 전국에서 가장 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 공간으로, 2001년 한국 기네스 위원회에서 최고의 약령시로 인증 받은 것에 이어 2004년 한방 분야 최초 특구로 지정된 바 있다. 현재는 전국에서 유일한 한약재 도매 시장 보유지로 한약재 가격 책정에 주된 역할을 수행하고 있다.

대한민국 한방의 대표 브랜드, 약령시야말로 대구시가 표방하는 대한민국 의료특별시, 메디 시티 대구를 구성하는 한방사업의 주된 축이라 할 수 있다. 약령시의 대표 행사이자 지역 주민들의 참여가 가장 용이한 약령시 축제 개최와 참여율 확대에 지속적인 관심이 필요한 이유 역시 이점에 있다. 약령시 축제의 활성화는 대구시가 명실상부한 한방 사업의 거점으로 한층 거듭나는 발판 중 하나가 될 것이다.

약령시 축제, 대구인의 진정한 문화 축제로 거듭나


오랜 역사와 전통을 자랑하는 대구의 대표 문화 행사 대구 약령시 한방문화 축제는 매해 단점을 개선하고 콘텐츠를 보강해 발전 양상을 보이고 있다.

지난 11월 약령시에서는 약령시 저잣거리 장터 한마당이 개최되었다. 약령 장터에서는 한약재를 포함한 다양한 한방 제품과 특산물, 건강 기능성 제품과 먹거리 등 다채로운 양질의 제품들이 시중가보다 20%에서 30% 저렴하게 판매되어 시민들의 발길을 끌었다. 한방 제품의 사용 확대를 장려하는 약령시 행사 중의 하나로 한방 제품에 대한 접근성을 높이고 그 우수성을 홍보하는 것으로 약령시 축제와 그 목적을 같이 한다.

대구 약령시 한방문화축제는 사상체질 무료 진단 및 체질별 약선 음식 전시, 다양한 한방특화진료, 한방 족욕 체험 등 한의약에 친근감을 가질 수 있는 다양한 체험 프로그램과 축제 통용화폐(엽전) 사용, 전승기예(작두로 한약재 썰기 달인) 경연 대회 등 약령시의 전통성을 보다 쉽게 체감할 수 있는 다채로운 프로그램이 운영된다. 주최 측은 다양한 구성을 통해 한의약의 우수성을 전파하고 관광객들에게 한방 체험의 공간을 제공한다.
